The Golden Age of Constantia Wine

In the early 1800s, Constantia wine was the toast of Europe’s most opulent balls, desired by iconic figures such as Queen Victoria, Marie Antoinette and Napoleon.

It then disappeared without a trace, only to be found in the prose and poetry of Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Charles Baudelaire and Casanova, as well as a few private cellars around the world. Until, against the odds, the icon was reborn a century later.

Told in an engaging and entertaining manner, this talk brings the story of the “sweet, agreeable and luscious wine” to life, through all its unexpected glories and fluctuating fortunes. With anecdotes featuring pineapples, Harry Potter, Kevin Costner and Amazonian warriors, it’s a story that reaches around the world.

Matthew Sterne can be booked for private talks, please email info@naturalwanders.co.za for more information.
